The choice between burial and cremation is a very personal one. Cremation is typically the more popular option for a number of reasons; typically a cremation isn’t as expensive as a burial, and there are more options for a final resting place for the ashes. Also, most Crematoria offer a greater choice of media facilities, such as live streaming (Webcasting) of the service and/or Photo Tributes.
Our Cremation Services
At J Lawrence & Sons we have been offering cremation services in Southampton since Southampton’s first Crematorium opened in 1931 in Stoneham.
We can assist with making an individual, unique and personal service for your loved one ensuring that that the Service is as special as they were.
There are three crematoria in the local area: Southampton Crematorium in Bassett Green Road, Southampton is owned and operated by Southampton City Council, Wessex Vale Crematorium located in the West End / Hedge End area and Test Valley Crematorium which is located in Romsey, both of which are part of the Westerleigh Group.
Crematoria
Southampton Crematorium has two service chapels available; the East Chapel seats approximately 98 people and the West Chapel seats approximately 45.
The Standard chapel time is 45 minutes; however, at Southampton Crematorium there are various options available. The Chapel can be booked for a 15 minute ‘Reflection Service’ with 30, 60 and 90 minute bookings available.
Southampton Crematorium also has a large and beautiful Garden of Rest set in a natural woodland and a Book of Remembrance.
Wessex Vale and Test Valley Crematoriums each have single chapel which seats approximately 96. The standard chapel time at both is 60 minutes. Also there are 30 and 120 minute bookings (subject to availability). Both crematoria have a Garden of Rest and a Book of Remembrance.

Obitus
Southampton, Test Valley and Wessex Vale Crematoria all use Obitus as their media supplier. Any music played at the crematoria would need to be played through obitus. To see their collection of music, please click below.
If there is a specific version of a piece of music which you cannot find on their library, Obitus will do their very best to source the music; as long as it is commercially available in the UK.
Obitus can also create Visual Tributes to be played during the service; these can be a single photo on the screen, a group of photos set to a piece of music or played on a loop throughout the service.
Should there be family and friends who cannot attend the service; Obitus offers a secure, professional livestream. All livestreams are also available to watch again for up to 28 days following the service.

History of Cremation in Southampton
Following the legalisation of cremation in 1885, there was a proposal to build a Crematorium at Southampton Old Cemetery (situated at the Common) but due to underwhelming public support at the time the plan was abandoned.
As attitudes slowly changed in favour of Cremation during the early 20th century. In 1931 Southampton City Council opened the city’s first Crematorium which was located on land behind South Stoneham Cemetery.
The popularity of Cremation increased over the following years which led to the original Crematorium being too small to cope with the increase in demand, so plans were drawn up to create a larger Crematorium to serve the city. A site just off Bassett Green Road, in Bassett (where it is to this day) was selected and opened in 1973.
Over recent years, two more crematoria would open in the surrounding areas, Wessex Vale in 2009 and Test Valley in 2017.
